High Protein Nut Butter

By Yvonne  Published On 15/08/2026

Why Add Whey Protein to Nut Butter?

Nuts are naturally nutritious, providing protein, fibre and predominantly unsaturated fats.

Adding whey protein increases the protein content while providing all nine essential amino acids. Whey is therefore considered a complete protein.

This makes protein-boosted nut butters an easy addition to breakfasts and snacks, particularly when you want to increase protein without substantially increasing the amount of food you’re eating.

Approximate Nutrition

Nutrition will vary depending on the nuts and whey protein powder used.

As a guide, per 30 g serving:

  • Calories: approximately 165–180 kcal
  • Protein: approximately 8–10 g
  • Fibre: approximately 1.5–3 g

For the most accurate nutritional information, calculate the recipe using the particular nuts and protein powder you choose.

Serving Ideas

Try your high-protein nut butter:

  • On wholegrain, rye or sourdough toast
  • Spread over a crumpet
  • With sliced banana
  • With apple wedges
  • Stirred through porridge
  • Added to a smoothie
  • Swirled through yoghurt
  • Spread onto rice cakes
  • As a filling snack straight from the spoon

Tips

Use unflavoured whey: This keeps the nut flavour dominant and makes the nut butter suitable for both sweet and savoury uses.

Check before adding salt: If your roasted nuts are already salted, you may not need any additional salt.

Adjust the texture: Different nuts and whey powders can produce slightly different consistencies. If your nut butter is thicker than you like, continue blending a little longer to encourage the peanuts to release more of their natural oils.

Storage: Transfer to a clean, airtight jar.

Can I Make It Without Whey?

Absolutely. Leave out the whey for traditional homemade nut butter.

You could also experiment with other protein powders, but the flavour, texture and nutritional profile will vary. Whey works particularly well because it provides a high-quality complete protein.

High-Protein Nut Butter in the Thermomix

Making nut butter from scratch is one of those jobs the Thermomix makes incredibly simple.

Three ingredients, one mixing bowl and a couple of minutes are all you need to turn roasted nuts into a creamy homemade spread with an added protein boost.

Prep time: 1 minutes
Total time: approximately 2 minutes
Yield: approximately 280 g
